Season Reviews
Netball within the college runs in two formats:
1) General Activity
This takes place during the winter term and involves both boys and girls. The sessions are fun based and aim to
raise the profile of netball in the College. Involving boys ensures a high level of competition and is ideal
preparation for the girls before the Welbeck netball season begins. It also allows students of all abilities
to gain a greater understanding of the game and enables those that have never played to learn the rules and join in.
2) Major Sport
Netball is a major sport for girls in the spring term. Currently we play in the Charnwood Schools’ Netball
League, playing local schools including Rawlins, Burleigh and De Lisle. These matches are usually played on
a Wednesday afternoon, with some extra fixtures added on a Saturday against schools such as Ratcliffe College
and Loughborough High.
Since joining the Charnwood Netball League in 2005 Welbeck have become host to the end of season Under 19
Tournament usually played in March, where all the teams in the league come together and compete for the
tournament trophy. This is run in addition to the league itself.
The 2008/ 2009 season saw Welbeck enter the Leicestershire County under 19 Tournament for the first time,
competing against schools from all over Leicestershire. We have three outdoor courts and one indoor court
allowing training and matches to take place throughout the year.
Coaches
The two coaches are Charlotte Calland (Head of Netball) and Zoe Hawkins (Head of Girls PE), both of whom
have a wealth of playing and coaching experience at county, regional and national schools’ level.
