Midlands Schools Swimming Gala (November 2009)
On Friday 13th November Welbeck’s swimming team set out on the journey to Corby to compete in the Midlands Schools Swimming Gala.
Everyone was a little nervous as we had a last minute adjustment to the team. Joe Solway, who was meant to be taking part, sustained an injury on the Wednesday so we had to find a replacement. Thanks to Pete Wallis, who kindly stepped in to do the fly, we then again had enough swimmers to compete.
With a very short warm up, and no chance to practise our dives, the tension was mounting.
First to compete was the boys medley team who went out strong, coming in 1st after the first two swimmers. Unfortunately for us, the last two legs couldn’t quite hold on and we finished in 4th position.
Having just watched this race, the girls decided that we were going to prove to the boys that we were better than them, and soon we were ready for the 4 by 50m freestyle event. The race went well, and all four of us put in a tremendous amount of effort knocking three seconds off last year’s times and all gaining a time under 30 seconds, meaning that we won this event with a time of 2:00.03. Mr Hall had told us that this was our weakest event, so when we found out that we had won we were extremely pleased.
The boys then had to follow our success in their 4 by 50m freestyle event. They went out strong again hitting the wall in 1st place halfway through, unfortunately then to be beaten in the last 10 metres meaning that they finished comfortably in 2nd position.
The girls, still buoyant from the previous win, thought that the medley would be our stronger event. The team went out well, but unfortunately we just didn’t seem to have the advantage over the other teams as we had had in the previous race, although we still finished a respectable 2nd.
It was a well enjoyed evening and everyone in the team performed really well, a special mention to the girls team as it is the best achievement in swimming that Welbeck has ever seen.
