Girls Hockey Review 2009/10 Season
After last years achievement of getting into the Leicestershire county finals, all of us wanted to keep the momentum going into this season, and improve Welbeck hockey even more.
With the new LVI showing lots of promise and after a couple of Mr Sandford’s infamous hockey fitness sessions, we were ready to get out on the pitch and play our first match against Mount St Mary’s. Although it was a 2-0 defeat, it was a great chance to see the new team play, and to get to know our teammates a little better.
Throughout the season it was obvious we were an improved team from last year, with wins against Oakham, Uppingham and Bedford. A highlight for many of the team was our match at Ratcliffe College. After quite a heavy defeat there last season, all the girls showed great determination and battled constantly to come out with a 2-2 draw against strong opposition, with Kathy Morten, our goalkeeper, pulling off an amazing save in the last seconds.
The whole team played consistently all season. Special mentions go to Lorren Clarke, who had never played before coming to Welbeck and became one of our main defenders by the end of the season; Kathy Morten (full colours), who amazed us with her saves every match; Catherine Henderson (half colours) was strong in leading and organising the backs; Abby Campbell (full colours) our top scorer, with Sophie Gale not far behind and Laura Wealsby and Harriet Richmond both gaining half colours for their work in mid field and attack.
The season concluded with both the first and second teams hosting a touring team- St Andrew’s School from Buenos Aires, Argentina. We watched their first team play at a very high level, managing to hold the Loughborough University 2nd team to a goalless draw. We then had a very even match against their 2nd team, where we played some of our best hockey yet, and came away with a 1-0 win. All the girls enjoyed hosting the Argentineans, getting to know a bit about their lives in South America, with most of us getting invited for a return trip. Then on the night before their departure we had a cake and film social enjoyed by all!
Many thanks to our coaches Mr Sandford and James Osborne, and to all the girls who represented the college this year.
