Girls Basketball
This year was the first in history for girls basketball at Welbeck, we managed to produce a team of 11 players, most of which had little experience in the game. The sheer determination and enthusiasm of the team combined with the intensive coaching from the external coach, meant we were up for the challenges set ahead of us during the season. After the lack of girls’ basketball teams in the area and much effort from Mr. Hubbard, Welbeck girls found themselves with three games to play against teams with a mixture of experiences. The squad selected consisted of:
- Rosie Camburn (C)
- Courtenay Pipkin
- Catherine Robinson
- Elizabeth Larkman
- Lorna Eaton-Brown
- Sophie Spencer-Small
- Emma Garner
- Katherine Barrow
- Prue Ellwood
- Naomi Peberdy
- Charlie Roberts
- Pamela Relph
The season began very well; with Welbeck winning their first ever match with a score of 40-20 vs Oakham. This gave the girls a huge amount of confidence for the proceeding games, and proved to the rest of the student body that the sport could be successful.
The second match followed much the same as the first with a score of 31-15 vs Groby, however our final match of the season did not end with such glory, with a final score of 30-2 vs Bosworth.
The whole season was very successful, and the squad worked hard not only to learn a lot of new skill and techniques, but to ensure a team sprit was kept high throughout.
I enjoyed myself throughout the year, which was mainly spent working on the drill and tactics, and words such as “twirl” and “twix” will always be a reminder of all the work that all the girls put into the matches and training sessions.
The possibility of having a team would not have been possible without persistent work and efforts by Mr Hubbard, Tara, the SMI and the team.

Boys Basketball
Basketball is a fairly new sport at college and only really got off the ground last year with Chris Croxford as captain. We began to train regularly and produced a decent team.
We managed to get some fixtures together for the newly formed squad to see if we were up to the standard. During last season 3 out of 5 games were won which we were all pleased with considering how quickly the squad was formed.
This year a greater emphasis has been put on practice, training and discipline with the support of Russell Jones as vice captain whose efforts are already making a vast improvement to the squad. We are also privileged enough to be trained by players from the Leicester Riders this year which progresses the standard of play even farther.
We have not yet played any games this season but look anxiously forward to playing Loughborough on the 5th march and hopefully bringing home the first win of the season for Welbeck!
