Armistice Day Assembly (November 2009)
Although it was 91 years ago that the guns fell silent on the battle fields of Europe, the act of remembering those who have lost their lives whilst serving their country is as important now as it has ever been. The horrors of war have been brought even closer to the Welbeck community by the death of Captain Daniel Shepherd, an Old Welbexian who was serving in Afghanistan, on Monday 20th July 2009.
At 1050hrs on Wednesday November 11th we spent a few moments reflecting on the life of Captain Shepherd. A short presentation was compiled and delivered by the Senior College Prefects, namely Nick Mahony (HOC), Laura Mason (DHOCA) and Richard Brennan (DHOCP). The assembly was introduced by Jordan Mayes (DHOCM), and this was followed by a moving reflection on the life of Captain Daniel Shepherd who joined Welbeck in 1997 as a member of York House. From Welbeck he proceeded to read Electromechanical Engineering at Shrivenham and also proved his talents in the field of indoor climbing. Captain Shepherd was serving with the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group when he died following an explosion in Nad-e-Ali District in Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan. At the time of his death, Captain Shepherd was commanding an Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) Team within the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group who were dealing with a confirmed IED. A full account of Captain Shepherd’s life and achievements can be found on the Ministry of Defence website.
The college joined together in saying a ‘Prayer for the Victims of War’ and this was then followed by two minutes of silence. We concluded our act of remembrance with the Kohima Epitaph.
