MOD Career Path
After successfully completing two years study at Welbeck, you will go on to read for a degree at university via the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS). Following graduation you will move on to Officer Training with the Armed Services or Initial Professional Development Training with the MOD Civil Service before entering your chosen career full time.
University
You can read for a degree at Newcastle, Southampton, Aston, Northumbria, Birmingham or Loughborough University. Places are also available at Oxford or Cambridge for students achieving high A-level grades.
Technical Bursaries
Whichever university you attend, the DTUS ensures that financial sponsorship is available to assist with your fees and living expenses. You will be awarded an annual technical bursary (currently £4000 pa).
Support Units
In addition to reading for a degree all DTUS students are required to join a military Support Unit at their university. Staffed by members of the Armed Services, the Support Unit will mentor and assist your progression through university. It will help you to understand your chosen Service, its traditions and the many benefits that a career in the Armed Services and MOD Civil Service can provide. The supports units for each University are...
- Aston - Taurus Squadron
- Birmingham - Taurus Squadron
- Cambridge - Defence Academy
- Loughborough - Typhoon Squadron
- Newcastle - Trojan Squadron
- Northumbria - Trojan Squadron
- Oxford - Defence Academy
- Southampton - Thunderer Squadron
Armed Services Candidates
You will satisfy a training commitment of one evening per week during term time. Workplace experience and adventurous training activities will also be arranged during holiday periods. Attendance for training equates to an average of 45 training days each year, for which you will receive attendance pay (around £1500pa) in addition to your technical bursary award.
Ministry of Defence Civil Service candidates
The Support Unit will act as an interface with the Civilian Management organisation responsible for sponsored undergraduates, monitor academic progress and offer pastoral care as required. You do not have to become a Reservist but will be expected to attend military-specific training evenings, sports and adventurous training activities for which you will receive attendance pay (up to £1500pa) in addition to your technical bursary award, for those activities you undertake. A work experience/training placement will be arranged for summer holidays at a Ministry of Defence establishment or industrial location, for which you will receive a salary.
