Art GA
Following several highly successful PSHCE art appreciation sessions last term, with our resident part-time art connoisseur Mr Dufton, the suggestion was put forward, by several of the more enthusiastic students, to have art as a recreational subject on a Thursday afternoon during our General Activity time.
Sophie Longstone was the driving force behind the setting up of the activity which is now enjoyed by over 20 students, for two hours every Thursday. We were allocated a decent budget with which to purchase materials for use, and Sophie has managed to order a vast array of artistic materials which have been enthusiastically received by the students taking art this term. Each of the students now has their own sketch books for individual usage, as well as being able to access a variety of other materials ranging from the more conventional, e.g. pastels and charcoal, to the more specialised, e.g. modelling rock and oil based paints.
Mr Dufton very kindly consented to supervise the GA for ‘07 spring term, and hopes for the students to be able to pass their time doing whichever type of art suits them best, rather than being constrained to predetermined project. Whether this be copying a sketch from a book or magazine, making outlandish 3D objects, or going outside to paint landscape, individual’s ideas and endeavours are encouraged. Some of the more memorable projects include the swords made by Alex Boyle and Emma Shrimpton for the PT social which occurred on the 27 of January, and the sketch of the Terry Pratchett character ‘Death’ and his sidekick ‘Squeak’ by Jenny Thompson.
It is hoped that the Art GA, now established, will continue to flourish for some time here at Welbeck. Indeed many of the participating students have commented, that it is fantastic just to be able to sit down for two hours of a week and relax - not being obliged to puzzle over the latest topics to have been introduced in physics or maths, but simply being able to absorb oneself in the satisfying pastime that is art.
Thanks go to Mr Dufton for encouraging and supporting us in this venture, and Sophie Longstone for organising it so capably.
