AS Further Mathmatics
This course is taken in the second year by some students who have gained at least grade B at AS level mathematics, and who are very interested in increasing their mathematical base. It is particularly useful to students in their first year engineering course, as the material found in the 3 extra modules studied will be studied in the first year at any university.
The emphasis is again on Pure mathematics and Mechanics, with students accelerated through the course by having more than one maths lesson per day.
| Course Structure | ||
| Module 1: FP1 | Further inequalities, summation of series, complex numbers, numerical solution of equations, first and second order differential equations, polar coordinates. | |
| Module 2: D1/S1 | D1 is Decision Mathematics and is a series of distinct topics such as Networks, Algorithms, Linear Programming and Critical path analysis, which are designed to take information with given constraints, and look for an optimum solution. S1 is Statistics and follows on from GCSE to include correlation and regression, the normal distribution and some further probability theory. |
|
| Module 3: M3 | Further kinematics of non-constant accelerations, elasticity, simple harmonic motion, circular motion, statics of rigid bodies. | |
